Visitors must have:
• A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining before expiration.
• A return or onward ticket (immigration may ask for proof).
• U.S. citizens may stay up to 180 days without a visa. -
Panama uses the U.S. dollar as its official cash currency. It’s called the “balboa,” but all physical bills are USD.
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Carry small bills for taxis, markets, and tipping. -
Panama has a tropical climate, hot and humid year-round (75–90 °F / 24–32 °C).
The rainy season is May–November, with warm weather and occasional heavy rain.
Light, breathable clothing is recommended. -
• Tap water in Panama City is generally safe, though many visitors prefer bottled water.
• Mosquitos are present year-round—bring repellent.
• Travel insurance is recommended for all travelers. -
Yellow taxis do not use meters—fares must be agreed on before the ride (not recommended for visitors).
• Uber and DiDi are reliable and affordable.
• The Metro is clean, cheap, and efficient if you’re comfortable with Spanish signage. -
• Local SIM cards from +Movil, Claro, or Digicel are inexpensive (passport required to purchase).
• Wi-Fi is strong in most hotels, cafés, malls, and tourist areas. -
